Plant-based: the diet that benefits both people and the planet

Published on 2024-12-23

A more conscious and sustainable diet

Conscious and sustainable, that's the plant-based diet! In recent years, there has been an unprecedented focus on what we eat and the adoption of healthier, more sustainable lifestyles.  In this context, the plant-based diet is rapidly becoming one of the most prominent food trends for the future. Less meat and more vegetables!

This is the philosophy of this diet that is based on predominantly plant-based nutrition, but not only. It's not just about consuming solely plant-based food alternatives instead of meat but adopting an approach that is first and foremost ethical.

The benefits for environment and people

But what do Italians think about this shift? A detailed analysis by the Plant-Based Products Group of Unione Italiana Food provides some insight: sustainability is a key factor shaping food consumption in Italy.  According to the report, 7.2% of Italians now identify as vegetarian, up from 4.2% in 2023

A significant portion is represented by the younger generation, just think that, in the last year alone, 82% of young people between 17 and 35 years old have declared that they have adopted, or will do so in the future, a predominantly plant-based diet.

A choice driven by greater awareness towards healthier and, above all, more sustainable eating styles. In fact, more than 6 in 10 young people (around 66.5%) see plant-based products as beneficial for the planet.

A cultural and social change

So, it’s time to embrace whole grains and flours, extra virgin olive oil, seasonal fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts, plant-based sweets made with natural ingredients, and everything nature provides to fuel our bodies with essential minerals and micronutrients. This shift supports not only personal health but a future that’s better for our planet!
